The Setting
Along the banks of the Ohio River just north of Henderson, John James Audubon State Park houses the world's largest collection of Audubon's art and offers exhibits on the artist's life. Here, nearly two centuries ago, the renowned naturalist and artist came with his family to operate a small mercantile business and to explore the surrounding wilderness in search of wild birds to study and sketch. A museum interprets Audubon’s life through his art and personal memorabilia, framed within a timeline of world events.
The Facility
Surround yourself with unspoiled, natural beauty in the 69-site campground. All sites have water and electric, tables and fire rings. A central service building has showers and rest rooms. A playground is also available in the camping area. Tent sites are available.
Park Features
The Nature Center comprises three areas: a wildlife Observation Room; the Discovery Center with hands-on exhibits; and the Learning Center, where the park naturalist and art educator conduct environmental and art programs. There’s also a small lake for fishing, 6.5 miles of hiking trails, a 9-hole golf course, six cottages and interpretive art and nature programs.
Camping Tips
John James Audubon offers a variety of art and nature programs – check in advance for the schedule (www.parks.ky.gov). There’s a Bluegrass music festival in May and an arts and crafts festival in October.
