A compass watch like the Timex Expedition makes more sense to me than a GPS. Take along a regular topo map and compass, though, you'll always need that. The Timex is light, straps to your wrist so it won't get lost, and you won't have to worry about batteries going dead. The compass circuit doesn't depend on satellites for reference.
